Recognition of Prior Learning, (RPL), – What is it?

What is RPL?
RPL is a form of skills recognition. It involves the assessment of unrecognised skills and knowledge you may have obtained outside of the formal education and training system. This may have been via work experiences, informal education and training, general life experience, or a combination of these elements.

How can RPL benefit me?

You may not have to duplicate the learning of skills that you have already acquired
    • It may reduce your study load
    • It may assist you to complete your course and gain your qualification in a shorter period of time

How will I be assessed for RPL?
To demonstrate what you know and can do, you will need to provide evidence which shows that you can competently meet the learning outcomes of the qualification you would like to achieve. This evidence may be in the form of :

  • A face-to-face interview
  • A practical skills test or workplace assessment
  • A portfolio that may include:
    • documents, photos, audio or video that and demonstrate your ability to perform particular skills
    • previous qualifications
    • letters from employers, or position descriptions that identify the skills you have built up over time

Remember, you already know and can do a lot – so why not get formal recognition for it?
