Application and Enrolment
An apprenticeship or traineeship is a training contract between an employer and an employee, in which the employer provides training and the apprentice or trainee learns the occupation or trade.
Apprentices and trainees can be of any age, and can be employed on a full-time or part-time basis, (subject to appropriate industrial relations arrangements).
Once you have successfully gained employment as an apprentice or trainee and your training contract has been registered, your employer needs to ensure that you enrol with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), such as GippsTAFE, to undertake the off-the-job training component of your apprenticeship or traineeship.
Prior to commencing training, the RTO is required to conduct, for each apprentice/trainee, a pre-training review of current competencies including literacy and numeracy skills. Also required is development of a Training Plan, in consultation with the employer and apprentice/trainee and (if required) school representative.
Enrolment fees that are paid directly by the apprentice or trainee can generally be claimed back within your tax. Please visit the Australian Taxation Office web site for additional details regarding claims for training purposes.
