Strong growth predicted for sport and recreation

GippsTAFE has significantly upgraded its Sports and Recreation facilities in the Latrobe Valley in response to predicted high demand for employment in the sector.

Industry predictions for Victoria by Deloittes Access Economics show strong growth in the cultural and recreation areas over the next few years.  Sport and Recreation Department Team Leader, James Farmer said GippsTAFE was keen to boost its training capacity to help meet that demand, with its associated potential for good employment outcomes for students.

The Sport and Recreation Department has relocated to a refurbished wing at the Morwell Campus of GippsTAFE at Morwell, which provides an expanded site for training.

“As well as the new location, we have revamped a range of courses to help people up skill so they can take advantage of the increased demand in the Sport and Recreation field,” Mr Farmer added. “These include some courses that begin in semester two next month (July).”

The department will be offering an intense Certificate IV in Sport and Recreation (Development) commencing in July.  This course will develop participant’s skills in areas of General Administration, Events and Facilities, Retail, Sales and Marketing.

The accelerated format from July to December will enable all successful participants to progress into the Diploma of Sport and Recreation, to further their career prospects.

July will also see the commencement of the Certificate IV in Fitness (Personal Training Course), at the Morwell Campus, which is open to students that have completed the Certificate III course at the start of this year, or those that completed it at the end of 2010.

“All of the courses are staffed by industry experts, such as Brian Healy, Scott Douglas, Sam Fenton and Les Ponting, all of whom have vast experience in the Local Sports Industry and have a wealth of knowledge that they can pass onto our students,” Mr Farmer added.

Anyone interested in enrolling into any of the above courses or who would like to find out more about them, should contact Scott Douglas or Brian Healy on 5120 4509. They can provide information on the Certificate IV in Sport and Recreation, Certificate IV in Fitness, or Diploma of Events.
